Edmonton & Area U-Pick Pumpkin Farm
Located near Edmonton, Alberta, in Parkland County, we are a small, local, U-Pick Pumpkin Farm. We grow a variety of edible and decorative pumpkins perfect for fall decorating, carving, or baking into holiday treats!
Somerset Farms is owned and operated by the de Windt family. Learn more about our family here.
Picking pumpkins from a field is very different in Alberta compared to other Canadian provinces, as our season is so short. Pumpkins can not survive frost or freezing so we have to pick early!
We are generally open from the beginning of September until the first frost of the season. Somerset Farms provides a unique pick your own pumpkin event at our Pumpkin Patch. Visiting our Pumpkin farm is a great time for the whole family to create memories and have fun picking their perfect Halloween Jack-O-Lantern!
We have 50+ varieties this year, ranging in colours and sizes. We are excited to offer new varieties at our farm this season, so it will be interesting to see how they grow in our Alberta climate.

Curing Pumpkins
How do I make my pumpkin last for more than a few weeks?
If you want your pumpkin to last you need to cure them. Curing is a very simple process that involves hardening the skin and stem to protect the flesh inside from deterioration. If done correctly, your pumpkin should last for 3-6 months.
It is important to leave the stem as long as possible when cutting it from the vine (4 inches or more is ideal) and be sure to carry your pumpkin from the bottom and not the stem. Wipe off any excess dirt from the outside of your freshly harvested pumpkin and place it in a warm sunny location. Outside in the sun is ideal, and let it sit for about 2 -3 weeks. Rotate it periodically to make sure all sides are exposed to the sunshine but make sure you bring it indoors when frost or freezing temperatures are forcast. Pumpkins can not tolerate being frozen! Your pumpkin is cured when the stem dries up and the skin can no longer be pierced easily with your fingernail. Then bring it inside and store in a cool place, off the floor, until you need it.
No Frost, No Freezing, No Snow, No Concrete!
Edmonton Pumpkin U-Pick
Spend the day with your family hunting for that perfect Pumpkin and enjoy our country setting.
Be sure to dress for the weather and wear shoes that are appropriate for walking in our fields. Pumpkin plants and stalks are prickly so long pants and closed toed shoes are highly recommended.
We are pet friendly. Dogs are welcome to come visit our farm, but please ensure they are kept on a leash. Also, please help us keep a clean place for all to enjoy and clean up after your dog.
Our Pumpkin Pollinators
We are proud to have Good Morning Honey hives on our land to help pollinate our pumpkin plants.
Please be aware that there will be bees in the pumpkin patch, but they are generally harmless unless threatened. Be sure to LOOK BEFORE YOU PICK!
Do I need to book an appointment?
Yes! We are a small family farm and we want to be a quiet place for families to visit. In order to limit large numbers of people coming at the same time, we require each car load of people to book a time slot through Simpli Events.
One $25 ticket is required for each car load of people visiting our farm. The cost of the ticket will be deducted from the ticket holder’s pumpkin purchase of $25 or more. No refunds will be given for smaller purchases or missed appointments. A refund can be issued (minus Eventbrite fees) if request is received 48 hours prior to ticket time. No refunds will be issued if cancellation is requested within 48 hours. Closure due to weather or other circumstance – ticket holders will be offered a refund (minus fees) or transfer of tickets to a new date.
Do you allow photography?
Yes we do. We encourage all visitors to the farm to take as many photos as they like for their personal use.

Will the pumpkins last until Halloween?
Late August to September is a great time to pick pumpkins in Alberta! Getting them to last until Halloween is a matter of curing them properly, which is very easy to do (see “Curing Pumpkins” above). I keep pumpkins in my basement from September to April every year, because our family loves pumpkin muffins!
When can I eat my pumpkins?
Like all fruits an vegetables you want to wait until they are ripe before you eat them. Sugar pumpkins should be orange all over, no green visible. All other pumpkins should have matured to their final colour. The skin of your pumpkin should be hard and not easily pierced with your fingernail. At this stage they would be optimal to consume. There is no harm in consuming an underripe pumpkin or squash, just like you can eat green tomatoes or bananas!
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Debit, Visa, MasterCard, and cash at this time.
My pumpkin has a blemish/sort spot on it, what should I do?
One of our guests shared a great treatment to prevent pumpkins from rotting. Scrape out the soft spot and get it down to hard flesh. Smear the scrape with honey and allow it to dry. The antibacterial properties of honey will allow the pumpkin to form an scab and prevent it from rotting! If the spot remains after the first treatment, repeat the steps until a scab forms.
